Looking back…

What a year! From launch parties at Lambeth Palace to dinner talks at the Athenaeum Club… the University of London’s Society of Bibliophiles ran a full programme of events last year.

Following a successful launch party, we were lucky to have Rick Gekoski join us for a lecture at Queen Mary University. The event was well-attended and it was fantastic to hear about Rick’s own journey in the rare book world.

For our next event we were treated to a private tour of the London Library. The event sold out within hours of the tickets being released! And those that were lucky enough to go, were given a sneak peak into the library’s collection.

Peter Harringtons hosted us once again for the winter party; which coincidentally collided with Burns Night! Some of our members, most notably Sandy Malcolm, performed a fantastic rendition of the Address to the Haggis; something which I’m sure we will treasure forever.

Last year we gave our first dinner talk at the Athenaeum Club, with Professor Mark Samuels Lasner; who talked about his passion for collection all things Victorian. The dinner was hosted in the club’s North Library, an apt location, we’re sure you’d agree.

To close our programme, we joined forces with the Cambridge Union of Bibliophiles and after a tour of the Cambridge Library’s collection, given by Mark Purcell, enjoyed a drinks reception in the library’s courtyard.

We want to thank all of our sponsors for their generosity- Bonhams, ABA Educational Trust, Peter Harringtons, Private Libraries Association and Ash Rare Books- we couldn’t do it without them!

And of course, a big thank you to lovely members for coming along to these events and for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
